CCSC of YWP DK 2026/2027

From the 8th to the 10th of May, the YWP DK board gathered for the first board weekend since the General Assembly in March.

We welcomed new faces to the board, rolled up our sleeves on the organizational structure, strategic direction, and individual roles, and made sure there was plenty of room to connect, laugh, and build the kind of team spirit that makes this work meaningful.

On the picture from left to right: Jan-Max Arana Juve (Alternate), Laila Vinther (Secretary), Franca Bauer (Chair), Joakim Bach Kaas (Member Engagement Officer), Pernille Storm Sletbjerg (Treasurer), Edea Kosanović-Marin (Member Engagement Officer)

Three focus areas will guide us in the months ahead:

  • Increase and nourish member engagement

  • Ensure robustness in our internal YWPDK organization

  • Strengthen relations with the water sector across generations and themes

There’s a lot to look forward to. We’re a motivated board with a clear direction and a shared passion for building a vibrant network for young water professionals in Denmark.

YWPDK Interview Series – Ida Linde Hansen https://ywp.dk/ywpdk-interview-series-ida-linde-hansen/ Sat, 22 Nov 2025 22:02:35 +0000 https://ywp.dk/?p=9647

Ida Linde Hansen

INTERVIEW

Over the past few years, there have been several changes to the Board of YWP DK. As a result, we want to extend our gratitude to the members who have led the network in these recent years. Through this series of interviews, we aim to highlight the individuals who have been instrumental in shaping the network into what it is today.

In this edition, we are pleased to introduce Ida Linde Hansen. She became a member in 2019 and soon after she decided to get envolved in planning events etc., before joining the YWP DK board in 2024.

We sincerely thank Ida Linde hansen for her dedication and significant contributions to the network. On behalf of everyone in the network, we wish you the very best in your future endeavors.

“…Joining the board felt like a natural next step to give back to the community that had already given me so much.”

What motivated you to join the YWPDK network? And when did you join the network?

I joined YWPDK in 2019, just before finishing my master’s degree at DTU. At the time, I was eager to expand my horizons beyond academia and connect with people who shared my passion for water. YWPDK stood out as a vibrant and welcoming community – a space where I could both grow professionally and build meaningful connections. For me, it was the perfect bridge between student life and a career in the water sector.

What led you to run for a position as a board member?

After getting involved in several local activities – like events in the Copenhagen regional group, WWC&E in Copenhagen, and planning for the European YWP Conference in 2024 – I realized how much I enjoyed contributing to the network. I wanted to move beyond individual events and take part in shaping the bigger picture: the strategy, the long-term vision, and the future of YWPDK. Joining the board felt like a natural next step to give back to the community that had already given me so much.

What was your role and how did you “grow” during the past years within the organization?

I served as Member Engagement Officer, where my focus was on strengthening regional member engagement. YWPDK grew during my time in the network, especially through the involvement in major conferences, which really helped elevate our profile both nationally and internationally.

Personally, I grew a lot too – gaining hands-on experience in collaboration, planning, and project management. But perhaps more importantly, I also learned when to step back. During my board term, I had my second child, and I made the decision to hand over my position so others could bring fresh energy into the team. Life happens.

How has your professional life changed being a member of the network?

YWPDK has been an incredible source of inspiration and professional development. Through the network, I’ve developed skills that go far beyond technical knowledge – like leadership, public speaking, stakeholder coordination, and event organization.

One event in particular – our Water Stewardship workshop in 2021—really stuck with me. It challenged how I think about water management and influenced both my work and my personal values. On top of that, I’ve met so many inspiring people and built a strong professional network that continues to open doors.

“…I’ve met so many inspiring people and built a strong professional network that continues to open doors.”

“YWPDK offers something for everyone. Whether you’re looking to attend cutting-edge events, having fun, or just connect with others who share your interests, the network is full of opportunities.”

Which challenges did you face while working at the network?

The biggest challenge was managing our time and energy – like most volunteer-driven organizations, YWPDK relies on a handful of passionate people who are also balancing careers, families, and personal lives. We often had to make decisions about where to focus our efforts. The big international events took center stage in the years after covid, while the regional groups sometimes received less attention. I hope to see a renewed focus on local engagement in the years ahead.

Will you recommend joining the YWPDK to other people? Why?

Absolutely – without a doubt! YWPDK offers something for everyone. Whether you’re looking to attend cutting-edge events, having fun, or just connect with others who share your interests, the network is full of opportunities. I’ve seen firsthand how it can lead to new job opportunities, lasting friendships, and a deeper sense of purpose in your work. It’s a unique space where early-career and experienced professionals come together and actually make things happen.

What I especially value is the creative freedom within the network. I’ve had the chance to organize events like film screenings at CPH:DOX, harbor swims, and guided tours through the historic cisterns beneath Valby Bakke. Creativity isn’t just welcomed – it’s actively encouraged. If you have an idea, there’s room to make it happen.

One particular memory from the network?

It’s hard to pick just one, but being part of the WWC&E in Copenhagen was truly unforgettable. From the months of planning to the energy of the conference itself – it was a whirlwind of inspiration. I remember the buzz of the keynotes, the quality of the sessions, the fun of the YWP dinner, and even swimming in the harbor with young water professionals from around the world.

Another standout moment came just weeks later, when we traveled to South Africa to co-host a workshop at the WISA Conference with the South African chapter. That international collaboration showed the true power of the YWP community – passionate, connected, and global.

How do you envision the future activities and the progression of the role of YWPDK nationally and internationally?

I’m proud to have played a role in organizing the first-ever European YWP Conference – and even more excited that it’s continuing in 2026 in Italy. I hope the lessons and energy from the Copenhagen event carry forward, and that many YWPDK members will join and experience the same sense of impact and connection.

Looking forward, I envision a network that keeps expanding its reach—while also nurturing its roots. That means strong regional groups, meaningful national events, and active involvement on the international stage. I believe YWPDK has what it takes to remain a leading voice for young professionals in the water sector – both in Denmark and beyond.

Oana-Daniela Cristea

INTERVIEW

Over the past few years, there have been several changes to the Board of YWP DK. As a result, we want to extend our gratitude to the members who have led the network in these recent years. Through this series of interviews, we aim to highlight the individuals who have been instrumental in shaping the network into what it is today.

In this edition, we are pleased to introduce Oana-Daniela Cristea. She became a member in 2021 and soon after she decided to get envolved in planning events etc., before joining the YWP DK board in 2023.

We sincerely thank Oana-Daniela for her dedication and significant contributions to the network. On behalf of everyone in the network, we wish you the very best in your future endeavors.

“…I wasn’t expecting much at the time, but I was very impressed with the people I met, the conversations and insights. I had to stay part of the network after that! Little did I know, it was just the beginning!”

What motivated you to join the YWPDK network? And when did you join the network?

Back in 2021, I was catching up with my colleague, Ida, and she mentioned this event that she had organized through YWP. Ida told me about the network and the event, and I decided to join! I wasn’t expecting much at the time, but I was very impressed with the people I met, the conversations and insights. I had to be part of the network after that! Little did I know, it was just the beginning!

What led you to run for a position as a board member?

By the time I joined the board I had participated in at least one national conference, a few of the regional activities and had organized a workshop through the network. I was fortune to be invited to join Ida, Nerea and Ines to the WISA Conference as part of an exchange program between YWP DK and YWP SA. During the trip to South Africa, I got to know Nerea and Ines who were part of the board at the time and got to hear a bit about the “behind the scenes” of YWP DK.  So naturally, when a seat opened in the board I volunteered!

What was your role and how did you “grow” during the past years within the organization?

I was in charge of member engagement and communication which gave me the opportunity to explore different methods to engage more young professionals in the network. Even though we had assigned roles and responsibilities in the board, I felt we were a really good team that shared tasks and had fun doing so! I can’t emphasis enough how impressed I am with Nerea, Francisca, Sergei, Ida, Joakim and Franca for the hours of dedicated work to keep making the network better and better!

How has your professional life changed being a member of the network?

I think I am better at my job as I throughout the least few years have been exposed to so many insights in the industry! I have an idea of the challenges and opportunities within the water sector, and I know what solutions are out there! There were many occasions where I got to listen to very interesting people and so, be acquainted with latest research in all aspects of water. This alone makes me better at my job!

I got to be part of organizing team of the very first European YWP conference and experienced what is like to organize an event of that magnitude!

I also got to advocate for young professionals and their opportunities in the industry, which for me, was the most fulfilling part of being a board member! We got to manage and maintain a platform for young professionals to meet and we took every occasion to promote YWPs!

“I also got to advocate for young professionals and their opportunities in the industry, which for me, was the most fulfilling part of being a board member!”

“I think the network provides the opportunity to meet your peers at an early stage and develop connections that will last for a very long time!”

Which challenges did you face while working at the network?

I think it was challenging to join the board at a point where so many things were happening at the same time and YWP DK became more and more popular. But as mentioned before, I had the best team to guide me through!

Will you recommend joining the YWPDK to other people? Why?

Absolutely! I think the events are interesting and fun, the national conferences are always insightful but above all you are joining a network run by passionate, dedicated volunteers! I would also like to mention that there are a lot of opportunities to get involved and participate in all kinds of events and conferences. Moreover, I think the network provides the opportunity to meet your peers at an early stage and develop connections that will last for a very long time!

One particular memory from the network?

There are many memories I hold dear from the network, but there was this one time, an event I had organized got cancel at the literary last minute. Instead of going home, we just came up with a plan and went to play board games! I thought it was fantastic how these people who didn’t know each other or  don’t see each other that often, really just came together like they were always friends!

How do you envision the future activities and the progression of the role of YWPDK nationally and internationally?

I think the role I had was already shifting and I believe a stronger focus on communication is already in the agenda.

I also think that YWP DK took the initiative to create an international event for YWPs to meet and I hope they stay on this track! I hope they manage to create a platform for young professionals to meet across the globe and share insights.

YWPDK Interview Series – Nerea Uri Carreño https://ywp.dk/ywpdk-interview-series-nerea-uri-carreno/ Fri, 23 May 2025 14:04:22 +0000 https://ywp.dk/?p=9225

Nerea Uri Carreño

INTERVIEW

Over the past few years, there have been several changes to the Board of YWPDK. As a result, we want to extend our gratitude to the members who have led the network in these recent years. Through this series of interviews, we aim to highlight the individuals who have been instrumental in shaping the network into what it is today.

In this edition, we are pleased to introduce Nerea Uri Carreño, who has played a pivotal role in advancing the network. Nerea has been a member since 2014 and has made invaluable contributions to organizing our events, national conferences, development of the strategy and various activities.

We sincerely thank Nerea for her dedication and significant contributions to the network. On behalf of everyone in the network, we wish you the very best in your future endeavors.

“Working in the network exposed me to people with different backgrounds and skills, it allowed me to meet people that became true career role models for me, people that inspired me, from whom I have learned a lot.”

What motivated you to join the YWPDK network? And when did you join the network?

I joined back in 2014, right at the beginning. I think I saw a post on LinkedIn saying they were looking for people interested in helping create a new network for young people in the water sector. I was very young back then, and knew very few people in Denmark. I thought it was the perfect opportunity to meet people who shared my interests and possibly meet new friends. I had no idea I would end up meeting some of my best friends in the network.

What led you to run for a position as a board member?

After I joined the first board, I became a normal member for years, I felt I was too young and inexperienced to be in that position. It wasn’t until 2019, because I knew they were in need of some extra hands, that I decided it was time to give back to the network from a different position. I had been an active members for years and I had benefitted from the events and activities, it was the right time for me to bring in the effort and help provide the same experiences and opportunities to others.

What was your role and how you “grow” during the past years within the organization?

My role when I joined the board for the second time was as secretary. As secretary, my role was mostly to ensure that the organization ran smoothly. I remember I had a lot of energy and I wanted to introduce many changes, I wanted to introduce new communication channels, to use new digital tools, to use the “digital” world to get closer to our members.

How has your professional life changed being a member of the network?

Working in the network exposed me to people with different backgrounds and skills, it allowed me to meet people that became true career role models for me, people that inspired me, from whom I have learned a lot.

The network also allowed me to develop professionally in ways my daily job didn’t. My role at my utility at the time was more that of a specialist, very technical. For me, the most exciting part about working in the network was always that it felt like we were running a small company, and we had to take care of the whole process. It did allow me to explore a more creative or entrepreneurial side of me. It also taught me many skills: from leading a team of people, developing and implementing strategy, communication skills, the list is never ending. I don’t think I would have ever started my own company if it hadn’t been for the experience and inspiration I gained from the network.

“I don’t think I would have ever started my own company if it hadn’t been for the experience and inspiration I gained from the network.”

“The network is a living being that changes over time, adapts to the new environment, challenges and opportunities. They have the exciting task and opportunity to redefine what YWPDK is to Denmark and the world in the future.”

Which challenges did you face while working at the network?

The network can be incredibly time-demanding at times… You always get to decide how much you want to contribute to it, but once you are in the key leadership positions, the amount of tasks and responsibilities increase. That can be challenging at times, even if you enjoy the work.

Will you recommend joining the YWPDK to other people? Why?

Absolutely. The network will bring something different for everybody, it can also bring you different things at different times in your career. At a minimum, you will make new friends and will be exposed to industry trends. From there, only you decide how much you want to get involved, and who knows, it might change the course of your life or your career!

One particular memory from the network?

As a member, the conferences. The annual conference was a highlight of my year. I got to meet new and old friends from all over the country that I wouldn’t otherwise. As a board member and Chair, the team building and strategy weekends were absolutely my highlight. Having the chance to be in the same room with people who you spend so much time every week working through a screen. Magic happens when people are together in a room.

What are your future plans within the Danish water sector?

Interesting question! I wish I knew the answer myself. I am in a bit a of a transitional period, having started my own company very recently. However, I do hope that I can continue to support the Danish water sector in being a worldwide role model in sustainability and innovation.

How do you envision the future activities and the progression of the role of YWPDK nationally and internationally?

I have only hope and excitement for what the new leadership team will be able to achieve. Having worked with almost all of them, I can’t wait to see where they continue to bring YWPDK. After the hard work of organizing the first YWP European Conference, they all deserve some well deserved rest, to process all that happened and to be able to revise where is the network today and where it needs to go, but there is also momentum to be leveraged. The network is a living being that changes over time, adapts to the new environment, challenges and opportunities. They have the exciting task and opportunity to redefine what YWPDK is to Denmark and the world in the future.

YWPDK Interview Series – Dorottya Wágner-Zafirov https://ywp.dk/ywpdk-interview-series-dorottya-2/ Wed, 30 Oct 2024 07:52:24 +0000 http://ywp.dk/?p=8455

Dorottya Wágner-Zafirov

INTERVIEW

There have been many changes to the Board and Regional Representatives team of YWPDK in the previous years. Therefore, we would like to thank the members who have been leading the network in the previous years. In this series of interviews, we will focus on the people who have been fundamental in bringing the network to what we know today.

In this edition, we introduce Dorottya Wágner-Zafirov, who has played a central role in driving the network forward. Dorottya Wágner-Zafirov has been a member since 2015 and has significantly contributed to organizing our events, national conferences and various activities. Dorottya has in the previous years served as a board member.

We want to thank Dorottya, for her years of dedication and her contributions to the network. On behalf of the network, we wish you all the best in your future endeavors.

“I’ve met so many people throughout the years and grew my professional network that otherwise wouldn’t have been possible. ”

What was your role and how you “grow” during the past years within the organization?

At first I was just a member attending the events in the Capital region and I also attended 6 national conferences in total throughout the years. At some point I got more active and decided to contribute to the network as well as I just really appreciated all the great events I attended.  So I was part of the organizing committee of 3 national conferences. Then in 2022 I got elected to be a Board member which I was part of for a one year term.

What motivated you to join the YWPDK network? And when did you join the network?

I’ve known about the network around the time it started as some of my colleagues at the University were among the first Board members. After the first national conference was held, I heard so many good things about it, so I thought I should join to see what the network is about as I got curious. I think it must have been somewhere in 2015 that I joined.

Which challenges did you face while working at the network?

I think some of the challenges were just stepping out of my comfort zone and doing things that I didn’t do before, like organizing conferences and being on the Board of a national network. But there were always fellow members who supported me if I needed help, and all of these grew me both professionally and as a person. I have learned from these experiences many skills that I will be able to use for the rest of my career.

How has your professional life changed being a member of the network?

I definitely think that the network gave me a lot professionally. I’ve seen and learned so much about water related projects around Denmark by attending technical events and conferences. I’ve met so many people throughout the years and grew my professional network that otherwise wouldn’t have been possible. And I have learned soft-skills that I could use at my daily work as well.

“I think some of the challenges were just stepping out of my comfort zone and doing things that I didn’t do before…”

“Finally, of course 2024 will be an exceptionally exciting year when the 1st European YWP conference will come to Denmark, which I believe is a great opportunity to showcase all that the network achieved in the past 10 years.”

Will you recommend joining the YWPDK to other people? Why?

Yes definitely! The network is full of really nice people who have a passion for water. You can learn so much by attending technical events or conferences and also just by talking to the other members and exchanging ideas. And you will for sure also have a lot of fun at the same time.

One particular memory from the network?

I think the highlight for me was the IWA conference in 2022 in Copenhagen. It was such a special event. Pretty much every corner I turned, I accidentally ran into a fellow YWPDK member, who I’ve met during the years I spent in the network. It was so nice saying a few words and catching up with so many from the network. All in all, I think we have a very inclusive and supportive network, and you will have friendly and familiar faces pretty much everywhere you go in your professional life.

How do you envision the future activities and the progression of the role of YWPDK nationally and internationally?

I’m happy to see that the network continues to be active after nearly 10 years! I think throughout the years the network proved to be an important contributor to the Danish water sector. So it is important to keep the level of engagement on a national level to attract new “young” members, which is only possible if even more current members become active. We have a well established network and I think that other newly established networks around the world can learn from our experiences. Finally, of course 2024 will be an exceptionally exciting year when the 1st European YWP conference will come to Denmark, which I believe is a great opportunity to showcase all that the network achieved in the past 10 years.

YWPDK Regional Groups – Interview with Gulia Dottorini https://ywp.dk/ywpdk-interview-series-nadia-kirstein-5/ Mon, 15 Apr 2024 08:31:10 +0000 https://ywp.dk/?p=8764

Giulia Dottorini

INTERVIEW

Are you curious about YWPDK regional Groups and what it means to be an active member?

Let’s hear from Gulia, our former Regional Representative for the Northern Region and find out about her experience.

“You get to shape the local network: it’s wonderful to stand in front of a blank canvas that you can fill in! ”

Why did you join the YWPDK network in the first place?

I decided to join because it looked fun and relevant for my field. A couple of friends of mine mentioned the YWPDK network to me and I was very attracted by the possibility to broaden my knowledge in my own field (wastewater treatment) and to better understand the water sector in general. I expanded my perspective on topics (drinking water treatment, climate adaptation strategies, nature based solutions, etc.) that were related but distant to my main work focus at that time. All this in a professional but informal setting.

The other YWPDK members really made and make the difference! I perceive the same enthusiasm that I have, so I immediately understood that it was the right place to thrive in my free time, professionally and personally. After joining the national conference for the first time (my first real contact with the network), I was totally hyped and hooked!

What tasks do you take on as an active member of the Regional Group in Aalborg? Please describe the organizational structure of the member group in Aalborg.

You get to shape the local network: it’s wonderful to stand in front of a blank canvas that you can fill in! It is about arranging local events (both team building and technical events), maintaining alive the interest of the local members, provide/receive inputs to/from the board members, collaborating with the other regional groups. This gives you the possibility to meet relevant people, strengthen your soft skills and learn new ones, not to mention the exposure you get within and outside the YWP network. It’s a really efficient setting also to get to push your limits a bit, and you’re never left by yourself.

I was amongst the lucky ones who got the Northern group started, so over time I participated first as driving member, then as regional representative (RR). Our group went through an interesting development, where at the begining the roles of driving members and RR were more defined and separated, where the driving members served more as support to the RR, who instead was a bit more in charge of the main practicalities. But now that we do not have a proper RR, everyone among the driving members can take charge and lead on different aspects, as we see fit. The tasks can be: maintaining ongoing updates within the driving members, contributing with ideas about which local events to arrange, contacting the tentative event hosts (local companies or universities), define the event program, set up our YWPDK platforms to inform our members about the events, coordinate activities with the board members, etc. We discovered that also this type of organisation without a proper RR works well for our group, where everyone can play a decisive part in it.

The best part for me was to see the local group and network develop from zero to the state where it is now. It has been sometimes challenging to get ourselves known locally, but we learnt something along the process and it was really a joint effort and commitment to make it work.I also appreciated very much the inputs and sparring with the other regional groups. I’m so proud about where we are today with the Northen group! I guess that’s also because I really enjoy spending part of my free time with my fellow YWPs, which are really something in between colleagues and friends!

“… I’m so proud about where we are today with the Northern group! ”

“I think we are pretty visible and active, and I am glad to see that our work is acknowledged also by the seniors and that our opinions are seaked in different settings. .”

How do you envision the future activities and progression of the role of YWPK?

I think that after 10 years (yes, this year we celebrate our 10th year anniversary!) we have gathered a wide range of experience with different activities, we have a pretty solid foundation and a strong mindset, and we’re good at our “standard” activities. So I think that we could dare to expand our tasks and skills outside the comfort zone, embarking for example a mentorship programme. But we would need support for it.

What have you gained personally from joining YWPDK and by contributing to the network?

Lots of professional contacts, and new friends too; a better understanding of the water sector and especially the Danish one; I learnt to put my work in perspective within the bigger water-picture. I think I am also much more receptive and aware of important water topics, even if they are not necessarily related to my current work.

What would be your advice to anyone contemplating on increasing his or her activity in the network or even just joining?

Just go for it! If you are even slightly curious and interested in it, go ahead and try it out. It’s a safe volunteering space where people are welcoming and very curious about each other. You can define by yourself how much time and energy you can be involved into as a volunteer, and adjust your commitment along the way. There is really a lot to gain and nothing to loose, and I can absolutely assure you that you won’t regret having experienced it.

Per Nobel

INTERVIEW

Recently there have been many changes to the Board and Regional Representatives team of YWPDK. Therefore, we would like to thank the members who have been leading the network in the previous years. In this series of interviews, we will focus on the people who have been fundamental in bringing the network to what we know today.

In this edition we present Per Nobel, a key member who has been driving the Capital Region group! As Regional Representative, Per has planned many interesting and fun activities and has truly cemented the regional group!

“…I was eager to connect with other water professionals at my age, who shared my enthusiasm in solving water, environmental and climate related problems…”

Why did you join the YWPDK network in the first place, and what led you to run for a position as regional representative in Copenhagen?

I joined the organization after a YWPDK arrangement at the IWA conference on modelling in the water sector (Watermatex 2019). I was eager to connect with other water professionals at my age, who shared my enthusiasm in solving water, environmental and climate related problems. During the Corona period I helped in arranging webinars on specific water engineering topics but also about working in the water sector in general. I was asked by the previous RR to take over the role and I was happy to say yes. I wanted to help consolidating the network and ensure to keep up the great work we do. I also wanted to broaden my professional network, practice leadership and gain insight into new water related fields.

Where do you see the role and the position of the YWPDK network in the Danish water sector and for the young water professionals in Denmark?

In my perspective, the most important role for the YWPDK network is to help to facilitate the sharing of connections, insights and experience among us. This makes us stand stronger and more visible in the water sector job market. It also gives us a strong voice and promotes our influence of ideas in the water sector. This is already our position today in my opinion.

How do you envision the future activities and progression of the role of YWPK?

I envision that our formal and direct role of influence and presence within different institutions, organizations and events to be even more heard. We are not only hear to learn from the water sector, but also to influence. We shouldn’t underestimate the level of collective knowledge and experience that’s gathered in our organization.

What did you gain personally from joining YWPDK and by contributing to the network?

Friendships, professional connections, job opportunities and direction of career, insight into new fields within the water sector, leadership and organizational skills, “hygge” and lots of fun 😊.

What would be your advice to anyone contemplating on increasing his or her activity in the network or even just joining?

Don’t hesitate. The organization is for you. All the work you do is voluntary – there is no risk and nothing to lose.

Nadia Kirstein

INTERVIEW

Recently there have been many changes to the Board and Regional Representatives team of YWPDK. Therefore, we would like to thank the members who have been leading the network in the previous years. In this series of interviews, we will focus on the people who have been fundamental in bringing the network to what we know today.

In this edition we present Nadia Kirstein, who has been central to drive the network. While she was a Board Member, Nadia worked on strengthening and growing YWPDK by establishing and maintain partnerships both in Denmark and internationally.

“I feel that the network and I became adults together. During the time where I was active in the network, I think we both became much more professional. ”

What motivated you to join the YWPDK network? And when did you join the network?

Back in 2018, I was contacted by the chair of YWPDK and asked if I wanted to run for the board. I was a PhD student at the time, and they would like to have someone representing academia. I was a little bit in doubt if I could manage both, but it sounded really interesting, and I ended up saying yes. I soon found out that I really enjoyed the tasks, and it wasn’t a problem for me to prioritize the time.

What was your role and how you “grow” during the past years within the organization?

In the beginning, I was secretary in the board and in this role I for example initiated the monthly newsletter that is still being send out to our members. Back then, there were no regional groups – only regional representatives. Once we established the regional groups, I became member engagement officer. Here, I had the role of supporting and facilitating knowledge sharing across the groups. I was also the YWP representative in the Danish steering committee for the IWA World Water Congress & Exhibition in Copenhagen in 2022. Here, I was responsible for planting some of the seeds for the YWP activities that took place at the conference. Besides that, I’ve also planned a bunch of YWPDK events over the years, helped initiate the Next Generation Water Action events with DTU Skylab and facilitated the very first YWPDK award. Finally, I ended my YWPDK career as chair in the first half of 2022 until I went on maternity leave. Here, I handed over the torch to Nerea, who’s the current chair.

I feel that the network and I became adults together. During the time where I was active in the network, I think we both became much more professional. Reflecting about the question, I can also see that I cherished my own personal development and being given the opportunity to learn how to run a network, motivate people, facilitate workshops etc. in the beginning of my time in the board. Towards the end of my YWPDK career, the motivation had shifted, and I was increasingly enjoying the opportunity to support other young water professionals to grow and voice their opinion, for example through the Next Generation Water Action initiative where the participating YWPs reported how the event had helped put youth and water on the agenda in their home countries – that made me extremely proud.

Which challenges did you face while working at the network?

I think the main challenge is that there is still a large responsibility resting on very few peoples’ shoulders – and these people mainly spend their voluntary time on the network. I would wish that more people would see the benefit of being just slightly more involved and contribute to e.g. event planning – both for the sake of their own development and of the network. This, however, I believe also requires that more employers acknowledge that it is valuable that their young professionals engage in YWPDK. Personally, I’ve been fortunate that my employers (DTU and Envidan) have supported my involvement throughout the years, otherwise it would have been impossible for me to engage as much as I did, since some events and tasks takes place during working hours.

How has your professional life changed being a member of the network?

I think it is impossible to capture in brief how much I have learned from being part of the network, and especially of the board. I think the greatest gift of the network is that it is one big playground where only the imagination determines what is possible and what can be learned. I’ve been allowed to go to events and presentations where I’ve really had my horizon broadened, giving me a much wider understanding of our sector. I have also learned to make strategies and facilitate workshops, I’m much more confident in speaking in public, better at idea generation, have learned a lot about communication, and have gained a huge network – just to mention a few. All these are things that I can apply directly in my daily job. To have obtained all these skills outside YWPDK would have been almost impossible.

I would here also like to take the opportunity to thank the people I’ve served with on the board for sharing your knowledge with me. I’m happy and lucky to call many of you my friends.

“I think it is impossible to capture in brief how much I have learned from being part of the network, and especially of the board. ”

“There is so much to be learned from going to YWP events in the different regions…”

Will you recommend joining the YWPDK to other people? Why?

Yes, of course. There is so much to be learned from going to YWP events in the different regions, and the annual YWPDK conference is filled with cool presentations, soft skills training (something I think “senior” conferences could learn from) and time to get to know your future customers, colleagues, collaborators or simply new friends. And if you choose to be more active, then only your own willingness to contribute limits what you can gain!

One particular memory from the network?

There are many amazing memories, so I will just highlight a single. In 2019, YWPDK was invited to give a keynote speech at the Malaysia International Water Convention in Kuala Lumpur about the role of YWPs. I was given the opportunity to represent YWPDK and ended up drawing the entire presentation by hand – a skill I had acquired at the previous YWPDK conference where we had a soft skill session about graphical facilitation. I also chaired a session at the conference and met with Malaysian YWPs who wanted to form a YWP chapter of their own. Such a great and inspiring trip!

What are your future plans within the Danish water sector?

I am very interested in the intersection of humans and digital solutions. I like to develop new methods and tools but at the same time I am very curious about communication and people. I work for Envidan as an industrial postdoc where I research how we can make control of urban drainage systems more used in the Danish water sector. In the near future, my plan is to help Danish water utilities applying digital tools to improve their planning and operation, always with a focus on that these solutions have to be applied by people. In the long run, who knows?

How do you envision the future activities and the progression of the role of YWPDK nationally and internationally?

I am sure that YWPDK will always be a relevant voice in the water sector – youth has so much to offer if they are just invited to the table. The network is in the hands of very capable young professionals, so I’m sure that it will continue to develop. The next big event that YWPDK is planning is the European YWP conference that will take place in Copenhagen in 2024 – I’m sure the YWPs that attend will have a blast and leave the conference with their backpacks filled with new friends and inspiration!
