Meet Karsten S. Nielsen, our YWPDK profile for August 2016. Karsten is currently finishing his BSc Thesis in mechanical engineering, while working as a project engineer at AVK.
What is your current work title and what is your background/degree?
Project engineer in product development. At the moment, I´m doing my Bachelor thesis in mechanical engineering, which will be finished in January 2017. So, by January I will be project manager in smart water initiative at AVK.
What is your motivation for working with water?
I find the water industry very exciting – especially non-revenue water. I see water as a very limited resource and therefore, I find the water we lose in our system to be a big issue and an area with a lot of potential for improvement.
What are your main interests within this field?
In my current- and coming job, I´m interested in looking into, not only products to bring down the amount of non-revenue water, but also look into overall solutions that can bring down the amount of non-revenue water on a global basis.
What was your motivation for becoming a member of YWPDK and how did you hear about the network?
I believe in a strong network and having good connections to other people in the business. Therefore, I joined YWPDK to extend my network and learn from other Young Water Professionals, whom I´m sure sometimes have different views on current issues in the business, and in that way listen and learn from other Young Water Professionals.
What are your thoughts on the challenges that we, as young water professionals, face in the coming years?
As I see it, we definitely need some strong, young, persons to lead the way and set the pace for the coming future. These persons should be let into the business gradually, so the business can have a healthy renewal.
